Appearance
The build of the American Shorthair is lean, long, and athletic. Though they resemble domestic shorthairs, American Shorthairs have a recognized pedigree.

Temperament
American Shorthairs are described as being easy going cats that make good companions.

Care
American Shorthairs require the same care as any other cat: grooming, claw trimming, teeth maintenance and veterinary visits.

Health
American Shorthairs can suffer from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes the heart to swell. This disease can be managed if detected early in the cat's life. For the most part, they are very healthy cats and benefit from a diverse genetic pool.

History
When settlers sailed from Britain to North America, they carried cats on board ship to protect the stores from mice. Most of these cats "settled" in the New World, interbred, and developed special characteristics to help them cope with their new life and climate. Early this century a selective breeding program was established to develop the best qualities of these cats.
