Here are hot tips for an eco-friendly tail wagger that lives according the 4R's – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink. There are over 75 million dogs alone in the USA. That is a lot of doo that impacts our environment.

The wonderful solution we found is actually an in-ground mini septic tank for dog waste called Doggie Dooley Toilet  (http://www.doggiedooley.com/) It's a snap to install and all you do is add doo and a digestive powder (enzymes and bacteria) and water to break the waste down. It doesn't mess your lawn up and handles two small dogs' daily business duties or one large dog. The bottom is open to create a leach field.

If this isn't something you see yourself doing, then pick up the deposits with paper or biodegradable poop bags, as plastic does not break down in the local landfill.

Other great green tips:

1)    Ask your vet about natural parasite products such as cloves and neem, wormwood and Ruta graveolens. Read the label carefully.

2)    Spay or neuter your pets to stop pet overpopulation.

3)    Adopt a canine companion into your loving home.

4)    Feed your dog holistic or organic dog foods and treats that don't have chemicals. A good inexpensive holistic dog food may be found at Walmart stores called Actr1um Holistic Adult/Puppy Dog Food for around $16.98, or try Global Natural Pet Products that offers unique holistic meals (http://www.globaldognaturalpetproducts.com/).

5)    Make a recycled doggy bed from sheets, towels, blankets, old sleeping bags or comforters. Create your own decorated dog bed made from a cardboard box complete with homemade bedding.

6)    Check out Worldwise's PoochPlanet ((http://www.worldwise.com) and Smarty Kat dog beds filled with recycled plastic bottles – pop bottles to be precise. The plastic is spun into a fiberfill like product that makes the beds really comfy and soft, and tough too. Beware your dog does not eat the filling by tearing the covering.

7)    Buy organic and non-toxic toys with dog safe and friendly stuffing. Supervise their play in case they rip a seam and the filling spills out or the squeaker get eaten. For super organic bones Purrfect Play has a wide range of tasty cotton bones for tough dogs (http://www.purrfectplay.com/dog-organic-plush-toys.php).

8)    For bathing use organic, non-toxic shampoos without phosphates or other chemicals. For a handcrafted canine shampoo and conditioner that smell heavenly, we like Cyber Canine's Mundo Botanica (http://www.cybercanine.com/) and Spot Organics that offers great coat care with their line (http://www.spotorganics.com/).

9)    Clean gifts on the floor up with natural products like vinegar and lemon juice.

10) Buy cotton braided or hemp dog collars, or make your own out of recycled jeans, sweaters, sweatshirts etc.

Lastly, slice up two lemons and pour nearly boiling water over them, then soak overnight. The next day, strain the liquid and pour into a spray bottle. Spritz the dogs daily with this solution and rub it into the coat. It is also a good idea to spray their bedding. No more fleas!
