Pet medical insurance has been around for some time, but its popularity has recently increased in part due to the skyrocketing costs for medicines, services and surgeries for pets. The demand for affordable insurance options has create a variety of inexpensive options available for those of the average income. It's not just breeders and show dog fanciers who need medicial insurance anymore.

Not only has pet medical insurance become more affordable, but the varieties of coverage have improved. The policies now come in an assortment of different packages and you're bound to find one that suits your needs and the needs of your pets.

However, with so many different choices available, it's important that you obtain several quotes from different companies to find which plan covers what you want at a price you can afford.

Some Common Information
Pet medical insurance mirrors medical insurance for humans in that there are co-pays, premiums, a clause for pre-existing conditions and varying plan levels. Usually these plans are based on the life your pet leads. Are they an indoor or outdoor pet, age, species and how your house is pet-proofed (yard, no yard, fenced yard).

Pet medical insurance is usually available to your pet after a "wearing" stage. This "wearing" stage usually last six to eight weeks for dogs or cats. If the pet is adopted from a shelter the waiting period may be longer depending on the companies rules and regulations.

Basic Company Policies
Before obtaining quotes for coverage it is important to decide what package suits your needs. The plans range from only covering vaccines and prescriptions to covering everything from flea control and heartworm treatments to major medical surgeries. Some companies may add "riders," or additional coverage to include dental care, micro-chipping and even spay/neutering.

A discount may be applied if you purchase coverage for more than one animal. Many plans also offer discounts on specific pet supplies, food and other services in a cross-promotional effort.

While the price of each plan can greatly differ, for the most part, prices can range from as low as $7.00 / month to as high as $80 / month.

Pet insurance is a wonderful addition for your four-legged friend especially if you're active with him/her. I have a very low insurance $16/month which I can definitely justify for my dog and budget and it protects me if the horrible or unthinkable happens and my dog would need a major surgery. Definitely worth it!
