As the weather starts to get warmer and draw summer closer, it is a great time to start thinking about flea and tick protection.
We will be spending more time outside with our pets in the following weeks and months. Unfortunately, what happens outside does not always stay outside. Those pesky little fleas and ticks love to hitch a ride on our furry four-legged friends.
Pests Are Out Earlier This Year Even if your dog gets a flea and tick treatment such as K9 Advantix or Frontline once a month, it is still important to check him or her for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes on a regular basis.
Mosquito bites are a growing concern among pet owners. This is most likely due to the increased awareness of the potential dangers of mosquito bites for humans and dogs.
Pest control company Orkin has already seen a jump in the number of mosquito related inquiries. Due to the short and mild winter we had this year, the bugs have already been more active and have been coming out earlier this year than in the past.
The Problem With These Pests Pests cause a number of issues and problems for pets. We are all familiar with the itchy red bumps mosquitoes leave us with, but we typically do not think about them biting our pets. Mosquitoes also carry heartworm disease, which can be very harmful or even fatal to our pets.
Fleas may transmit Lyme disease to our dogs and cats, and they are the source of tapeworms. However, the dog or cat will only be infected with the tapeworm if he or she swallowed a flea on its skin. Since our pets use their teeth to scratch themselves, this is a concern.
Ticks can also cause some other serious issues. So far, the instances of ticks has not increased, but they are still a concern.
What to do About It We have all heard about flea and tick monthly treatments such as Frontline and K9 Advantix, but there are other options. If you are considering a natural or organic method, you can read more about some options by reading Natural Flea and Tick Prevention and Treatment Alternatives.
When all else fails and your dog or cat does come home with some unwanted guests, there is the PerFect Pet Product - The Tick Key. It is a keychain available in many colors that has a funny shaped hole in the middle that is used to remove ticks in one piece. Read more about it to find out how to use it.
