For many people, families and future families, dogs represent a family member, not just a pet. That’s why more and more couples want to include their beloved dog into their wedding in every possible way. From ring bearers to groomsmen and bridesmaids, dogs are included and they enjoy the celebration. However, before giving them a role or inviting them, there are a few things you need to take care of first.

Check with the venue

Even though it is important, this step is easy to forget. Make sure to check the pet policy of a desired venue before you book so you wouldn’t end up in an awkward “no pets allowed” situation. Some venues that do allow animals inside may ask for updated dog licenses and shot records, so make sure you have everything prepared. Also, it is a good idea to take your dog to your venue before the wedding so they will have a chance to get used to it.

Get a dog sitter

Since it’s going to be a long day and you will be busy with some other things, it’s a good idea to designate someone to take care of your dog. You can either ask a friend or a family member your dog adores or find him a dog sitter. Nevertheless, there should be someone who will provide your dog with fresh water, some treats, food and toys. This will take your mind off of obligations and help you focus on other things you need to do, while your dog is happy and secured. Also, wedding receptions can get loud and messy and it’s a relief to know there is someone who can take your dog back home while you are enjoying your big day.

Notify your photographer

You certainly want your furry friend to be included in the wedding photos, so make sure your photographer knows about it. There are even ways to teach your dog how to pose for the photos. Such training is essential especially if your dog is energetic and you don’t want your photographer to lose time chasing the dog around. Freshen up the commands such as sit and stay with your dog before the big day and have some people help you prepare the dog for the photos. However, you don’t have to settle for ordinary posing with the dog, rather let the professionals like those from Perfect Moment capture some memorable moments and fun activities your dog did.

Notify the guests

Include in your wedding invitations that your dog will be present. It is essential for your guests to know that your dog will be there, especially if some of them are allergic to dogs. The notification will give them the chance to prepare and bring any necessary medication. Additionally, if the guests know your dog will be there they could even bring their own pets for your dog to have some company and enjoy the celebration even more.

Practice makes perfect

You can’t and shouldn’t just expect your dog to behave well if you haven’t prepared him for the big day. Practice as much as you can before the wedding. Go through basic commands for good behaviour while you should practice your dog’s role as many times as needed. If he is walking down the aisle with you, carrying flowers or rings, it needs to be practiced. However, don’t forget to reward your dog like you always do while training. Also, if your dog has a sitter or a handler, let them practice together in order to be completely comfortable with each other.

These simple things need to be considered before the big day with your dog. If everything is in ordered and both of you are rehearsed, you will be able to celebrate the big day with your beloved furry ball by your side.
